India, officially known as the Republic of India, is the second-most populous country in the world and seventh-largest in land area. Hence, the central government also announced on August 5 that the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 would be revoked and that the state would be divided into Jammu and Kashmir UTs and Ladakh UTs.
And the number of UTs has shrunk to eight following the merger of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

All the Union Territories of Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli have become a single union territory since January 26 through a Bill passed by the Parliament in the winter session. With the merger of Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, the number of UTs have come down to eight. Out of all the states, the three states they are, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Uttarakhand have different capitals for their summer and winter sessions of the legislature.
As India is a federal union made up of 28 states and 8 union territories, totalling 36 separate entities.
