List of Padma Awards 2022: The Government of India has instituted two civilian awards—a three-tier Padma award and the Bharat Ratna in 1954. The Padma Award is one of the country’s premier civilian awards which is presented to people who have excelled in their respective fields. And the Padma Awards are given annually by the President of India on Republic Day in a traditional ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The Padma awards were categorized into three categories – first category, second category and third category. These were successively re-titled as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri through a Presidential notification issued on January 8, 1955.

Padma Vibhushan

Padma Vibhushan is given exceptional and distinguished service. It is the second-highest civilian award in India.

Padma Bhushan

Padma Bhushan is given for distinguished service of a high order. It is the third-highest civilian award in India.

Padma Shri

Padma Shri is given for distinguished service. In order of civilian awards, it ranks fourth.

History of Padma Awards

  • The Padma Awards were instituted by the Government of India in 1954.
  • It is awarded annually on the occasion of Republic Day
  • The award does not add up to a title and cannot be used as a suffix or prefix to the recipient’s name.

Details About Awards

  • The awardees are presented with a medal and a Sanad signed by the President of India.
  • The recipient is also given a small repeat of the medal, which they can wear during any ceremonial and state functions etc.
  • The names of Padma awardees are published in the Gazette of India.
  • The total number of awards to be given in a year should not exceed 120 (posthumous awards and excludes Foreigners/NRIs/OCIs).

The Padma Awards for the year 2022 were announced on the occasion of the 73rd Republic Day. This year the President has approved the conferment of 128 Padma Awards including 2 duo cases (in a duet case, the award counts as one) as per the list below. And the list includes 4 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri awards. Here, 34 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRIs/PIOs/OCIs and 13 posthumous awardees.
