List Of Asian Countries: Being the biggest continent in the world, Asia includes 50 independent countries and occupies the eastern part of the single Eurasian landmass. Surrounded by the Arctic Ocean from the north, the Pacific Ocean from the east, and the Indian Ocean from the south, it is separated from Africa by Suez Canal. And the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea separate Asia from Europe, farther the overland border runs through the Caucasus Mountains, the Caspian Sea, the Ural River, and the Ural Mountains. This boundary crosses through the territory of Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey, so these states are on both continents.

Armenia and Cyprus geographically are in Asia, but politically and culturally, they are also considered part of Europe. The largest of the Asian countries by area is Russia, which occupies about 30% of the total territory of the continent. And the smallest one of the independent states is the Maldives. So it is an archipelago of islands famous for its beach resorts. The most visited country tourists in this region are China as a huge cultural centre, followed by no less popular destinations like India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Turkey

About Asian Countries

As per the United Nations, Asia has 49 countries. Although depending upon the organization or government making the list, Asia can have as few as 45 or as many as 53 countries. So the continent is also home to a varying number of “administrative regions” and dependent territories.

Hence this ambiguity can attribute to multiple factors. And in the case of Asia, the most significant complication is the presence of several territories that are considered independent countries by some organizations and governments, but not by others.

Like, the island nation of Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state, but the Chinese government claims it as part of China, along with territories Hong Kong and Macao (and the United Nations seems to agree).

Likely, Israel and Palestine have both been recognised as sovereign states by many members of the United Nations, but haven’t yet been granted official nationhood. Therefore, as a result, they appear on some lists of countries in Asia, but not on others.

In addition, confusion is created by transcontinental countries, which cross over continental lines. For example, Egypt is mostly in Africa, but its northeast corner extends into Asia. And Turkey lies almost entirely in Asia, but its biggest city, Istanbul, is located in the tiny portion of Turkey that extends into Europe.

Few Important Facts About Asian Countries

Now, Russia above presents an even larger quandary: 75% of Russian land lies in Asia, but 78% of Russian people live in the European portion. Therefore this gives Russia a legitimate place on both continents, depending on the measured variable.

Lastly, the dividing lines between continents are sometimes ambiguous, especially at sea. And the island country of Cyprus, for example, is considered by the United Nations to be part of Asia, but it is also a member of the European Union. Likely, many islands of Oceania could arguably be considered part of Asia, Australia/Australasia, or even South America. So even land boundaries, such as the dividing line between Europe and Asia, have changed throughout history.

Purpose of this list, we will consider Egypt part of Africa, Turkey part of Asia, and Cyprus part of Europe. Russia will be listed in Asia as well as Europe. So Israel and Palestine will be listed independently. Macao and Hong Kong will be considered part of China, and Taiwan will be listed independently.

By Geographically

So geographically speaking, Asia is the world’s largest continent by a wide margin. Russia is the largest country in Asia, despite the fact that a full 25% of Russia’s 17,098,250 square kilometres of the territory is located in Europe (where it is also the largest country). Hence China comes in second in Asia, with a total area of approximately 9,600,010 km².

As we know, Asia is also the world’s most populous continent. So this is due primarily to the presence of the world’s two most populous countries, China and India, which have 1.44 and 1.38 billion people respectively.

So in addition to China and India, five other Asian countries rank among the top 15 most populous countries in the world: Indonesia (#4, 276.4 million), Pakistan (#5, 220.9 million), Japan (#11, 126 million—but in decline largely due to low fertility rates and an ageing population), the Philippines (#13, 111 million), and Vietnam (#15, 98.2 million), Russia (145.9 million) ranks 9th, but it is considered European for population purposes because only 22% of Russians live in Asia.

But Asia also includes some of the world’s smallest nations. The tiny country of Brunei, on the island of Borneo, has a population of just 437,000. And the Maldives, a tropical island country in the Indian Ocean, has 540,500 people, while the landlocked Kingdom of Bhutan, located in the Eastern Himalayas and bordered by China, has just 771,600 inhabitants.

List Of Asian Countries: Top 10 Asian Countries And Their Ranking

Japan (Rank 1)

Topping the list, Japan scores high in all areas, especially in “Entrepreneurship,” “Movers,” “Power,” and “Cultural Influence.”

Abe’s Japan has been trying to come off two “lost decades,” a period of sluggish economic growth that followed the burst of multiple asset bubbles.

Singapore (Rank 2)

Singapore receives high scores in “Movers,” “Entrepreneurship,” “Cultural Influence” (Culturally significant in terms of entertainment, fashionable, happy, has an influential culture, modern, prestigious, trendy), and “Open for Business.”

China (Rank 3)

China scores high in four areas, “Power,” “Movers,” “Heritage,” and “Entrepreneurship.”

China’s high scores in all three areas, especially in “Entrepreneurship” is an encouraging sign for the future of the world’s second-largest economy. Entrepreneurship will help China make the next leap forward, from imitation to innovation, which will make its growth sustainable.

South Korea (Rank 4)

South Korea receives a high score in three areas, “Entrepreneurship” (Open to the global economy, educated population, entrepreneurial, innovative, provides easy access to the capital, skilled labour force, technological expertise, transparent business practices, well-developed infrastructure, rule of law), “Power,” and “Movers.”

India (Rank 5)

India scores high on three criteria: “Movers,” “Heritage,” and “Power” (A leader, economically influential, politically influential, strong international alliances, strong military).

Meanwhile, India has maintained a stable political and macroeconomic environment, reformed the tax system, and fought corruption with de-monetization.

These policies have helped India’s economy outperform most emerging markets in per capita GDP growth while bringing inflation and unemployment down.

Thailand (Rank 6)

Thailand scores high on four criteria: “Adventure,” Movers,” Heritage” (Culturally accessible, has a rich history, has great food, many cultural attractions), and Open for Business.

Still, Thailand has yet to find its old glory days and remains an emerging market.

List Of Asian Countries

Malaysia (Rank 7)

Malaysia’s scoring profile is very similar to that of Vietnam. That means that the country scores highly in the “Movers” and “Open for Business” criteria, though that hasn’t helped its equity markets, which have been underperforming those of other Asian countries over the last five years

Indonesia (Rank 8)

Like Vietnam, Indonesia receives high grades on “Movers.” But it ranks highly on another criterion, “Open for Business” (Bureaucratic, cheap manufacturing costs, corruption, favourable tax environment, transparent government practices).

A business-friendly environment and falling corruption and debt levels have helped Indonesians catch up with other Asian countries and become better off than Filipinos in per capita income in recent years.

Vietnam (Rank 9)

Like the Philippines, Vietnam ranks average in most criteria, but it ranks highly on “Movers,” which counts for 10% of the ranking, and includes such things as “Different, distinctive, dynamic, unique,” which have fueled Vietnam’s robust growth rates.

Investors have taken notice. In the last twelve months, Vietnam’s equity markets were among the top-performing markets in Asia

Philippines (Rank 10)

While ranking average on most criteria, the Philippines is ranking high on the “Adventure” criterion, which weighs for 3.7% of the score and includes such things as “friendly, fun, pleasant climate, and scenic.”

Apparently, Duterte’s Philippines has maintained something from the glory days of the 1960s, though it has been bypassed by one Asian country after another in per capita GDP.
