India, the second most popular country in the world, has many religions, festivals, and customs. Most of the festivals across the country are common among all the communities.   • Diwali, the festival of lights, is usually celebrated in the month of October or November every year. It is a 5-day Hindu festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil. In North India, Diwali is celebrated to honor the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana.
  • Holi, the festival of colors, is usually celebrated in the month of March every year. During this festival, people burn idols, and lighthouses and douse each other with water bills and water.
  • Maha Shivratri means the night of Lord Shiva. Devotees from all over the country visit Shiva temples and offer Bilva leaves to Lord Shiva. There is extensive dancing and singing to keep people awake all night.
  • Ramadan is the month of fasting for the Islamic community. Muslims abstain from drinking, eating, and smoking during the month. The festival aims to teach the community of Islam about humility, patience, and spirituality toward God.
  • Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival that celebrates the love, bond and affection between sisters and brothers. This festival is usually celebrated every year in the month of August. On this day sisters tie rakhi on the wrists of brothers.

  • Dussehra, a Hindu festival, celebrates the triumph of Lord Rama over Ravana. The festival also signifies the triumph of Goddess Durga over Mahishasur. Mysore is a famous destination to celebrate this festival with friends and families.
  • Ganesh Chaturthi, a Hindu festival, marks the birthday of Lord Ganesh or Lord Ganapati. The festival is celebrated by the worshippers of Lord Shiva and the worshipers of Lord Vishnu. Baisakhi, a primordial harvest festival, celebrates the New Year for the Sikh community.
