Chief Justice Of India List: At present, there are 34 judges in the Supreme Court of India including the Chief Justice of India. Nuthalapathy Venkata Raman became the 48th CJI on 24 April 2021 and will continue to serve till his retirement on 26 August 2022.
With the establishment of the Supreme Court of India on 26 January 1950, 47 judges have served as the Chief Justice of India so far. Nuthalapati Venkata Raman is the 48th Chief Justice of India.
The Chief Justice of India is appointed by the President of India and can hold office till the age of 65 years. Normally, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court of India is appointed as the Chief Justice of India. The Federal Court of India came into existence on 1 October 1937. And the first Chief Justice of India was Sir Maurice Gwyer (1 October 1937 to 25 April 1943). The Federal Court of India functioned between 1937-1950. Chief Justice Harilal Jekisundas Kania was the first Indian Chief Justice of India.
Justice Y. V. Chandrachud is the longest-serving Chief Justice (February 1978 – July 1985), serving 2696 days, while Kamal Narayan Singh is the shortest-serving (21 November 1991 – 12 December 1991), just 17 days.

About Present Chief Justice
N. V. Raman became a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on 27 June 2000. On 2 September 2013, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and on 17 February 2014, he became a judge in the Supreme Court of India. In March 2021, the then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court SA Bobde recommended him as his successor for the post of Chief Justice. President Ram on 6 April 2021, taking the oath of office at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 24 April 2021. Ramana was appointed as the 48th Chief Justice by Nath Kovind. He was replaced by Justice U.U. Lalit.
